Elk Alces alces In the Irkutskaya region there is an Eastern-Siberian kind of elk, which is considered to be the largest. The body of an adult male is 300 cm , the height is 235 cm , and weight is 750 kg . Only males have antlers of different forms, with a span almost 2 meters and weight of 35 kg . Hunting terms - from October 10 till December 31 An elk is an inhabitant lives in the woods. It can be met in different kinds of woods, but prefers thicket with young trees of deciduous breeds and bushes, with damp, bogged places and old burned down trees. Elks swim very well and in summer they spend much time in the water, preserving from heat and insects. The matrimonial period of elks falls on September-October, rare in the end of August and this period is conducted by males' roaring and fights between them. The period of throwing down of the antlers in Eastern Siberia are in the end of December and January; most of the elks throw their antlers down in February. That's why there is no need for shooting them during the matrimonial period. Hunting for an elk -       Hunting is held in autumn-winter period from October 15 till December 31 -       The day temperature is from - 5 0 С to - 30 0 С -       Depth of snow is 10- 40 cm -       The best tour term is 7 days -       The group quantity: 1-2 persons Hunting is held in the way so called "s podchoda". This method has high expectations from the hunter. A hunter and a forester are going through the open places looking for an elk, where it possibly feeds and lays. They go only on foot very slowly and cautiously, noting the direction of wind not to be smelled or noticed by the elk. The elk has a good sense of hearing and smell, but sees poorly. If a hunter, dressed in well adjusted clothes and shoes, approaches very  attentively and  patiently towards the victim, the success will be supplied. The shot is made from 80- 150 m . -       The recommended weapon at the hunting carbines or rifles of a powerful cartridge calibre not less than 7,62 mm . -       Recommended clothes: winter (not heavy) hunting costumes of  white  colour or another colour but with camouflaging dressing down , a white woolen cap, winter hunting shoes with soft soles, gloves. -       The delivery up to the hunting place: vehicle, in the addition wheel and caterpillar tractors, motor boats, animal-drawn transport can be used. -       The time from Irkutsk up to the hunting place takes 4-6 hours; there will be a stop for an hour for resting and eating. -       Accommodation of hunting-tourists depends on the hunting place. Stay is possible in home conditions of Siberian hunters-tourists, hunting bases, winter stations. -       Serves: timbered loghouses, furnace heating, three-single meal, Russian bath-house, toilet is outside .
