Musk deer Moschus moschiferus A musk deer is considered to be the smallest deer in Siberia. The body of this animal is between 85 and 100 cm , height is 60- 65 cm , weight is 15- 17 kg . It has no antlers, but adult males have got long (up to 10 sm) fangs serve as fight tools. Hunting terms - from October 15 till December 31 Musk deers live in the dark coniferous taiga, deep woods, remote places, where it's easy for it to hide from enemies. Saving from the prosecution, a musk deer, making huge jumps, sharply changes d irection. It can leap up on a tiny ledge of a rock, and remains there for a while inaccessible for an enemy. They call these places "otstoy". Males have in an area in their stomachs a special smelling gland (musk deer's jet) weighing 10-36 gr , which is appreciated in the eastern medicine very much and is used for manufacturing high-quality spirits. When dried, the jet can be stored for many years. Hunting for a musk deer "s podchoda" -       Hunting is held in autumn-winter period from October 15 till December 31 -       The day temperature is from - 5 0 С to - 30 0 С -       Depth of snow is 10-40 sm -       The best tour term is 7 days -       The group quantity: 3-4 persons Hunting is held as the following: A hunter conducted by an experienced forester comes to the hunting place; they are looking for steps of a musk deer male. Having found the steps, they begin to pursue an animal. They go cautiously towards the animal's direction, looking around the sides attentively, trying not to frighten off the rare animal. The shot is made from 50- 150 m . -       The recommended weapon at the hunting carbines or rifles of calibre not more than 7, 62 mm . Only a cautious physically trained hunter can fully enjoy this kind of hunting.         Recommended clothes: winter (not heavy) hunting costumes of  white  colour or another colour but with camouflaging underlayers, a white woolen cap, winter hunting shoes with soft soles, gloves. -       The delivery from Irkutsk up to the hunting place: vehicle, in the addition can be used motor boats, animal-drawn transport. -       The time from Irkutsk up to the hunting place takes 4-6 hours; there will be a stop for an hour for resting and feeding. -       Accommodation of hunting-tourists depends on the hunting place.
