A bear is the largest of our ground predators
Weight of a single animal reaches 480 kg. The body is about 2,55 m.
The height is about 1, 35 m.
Usually adult bears are from 120 kg to 250 kg.
Terms of winter hunting are from the November 01 till March. 01.
Terms of spring hunting “na privade” are from April 25 till June 01.
Terms of spring hunting on Lake Baikal are from May 25 till June 01.
The bear's coloring varies from dark – brown (almost black) up to light - sulfur. This animal prefers old mixed wood with fallen, burned down trees and bogs.
During the severe winter bears sleep in their dens and is very vulnerable. Thus their organisms spend the reserve of fat economically. In the case if waken by somebody, all the bears' organs begin to work; he loses his weight and becomes “a loafer” so called “shatun”. Such kind of a bear is always hungry, hesitant and very dangerous. Before lying a bear gathers different twigs and brings them into his dens. More than often he lies down under a trunk of a fallen tree at the roots; sometimes he digs out earthen dens; in mountainous area he uses caves and cracks among rocks. It happens to be two or three bears together in one den.
Hunting for a bear– “in the den”
• Winter hunting is held in from November 01 till March 01.
• The day temperature is from – 15 º С up to – 35 º С .
• The snow level is 30-70 sm.
• The best tour term - 7 days.
• The group quantity: 1-3 persons.
• The delivery up to the hunting place: vehicle, snowmobile, in addition can animal-drawn transport can be used, the hunting ski.
• The time from Irkutsk up to the hunting place takes 4-6 hours; there will be a stop for an hour for resting and eating.
• Accommodation of hunting-tourists depends on the hunting place. The stop is possible in home conditions of Siberian hunters-tourists, hunting bases, winter stations.
• Serves: timbered loghouses, furnace heating, three-single meal, Russian bath-house, toilet is outside.
Hunting is planned in two ways:
“A bear is in the den”. A hunter-tourist and foresters come up to the found den very carefully. Foresters make so called “zalom” – locking the way out of the den with cut down poles, after that, they “awake” the animal. At this moment the hunter has an opportunity to shoot at the exited bear, pulling out from the den. In this case, the hunter can see the half of the animal's body, as it is “zalomlen” (locked). The shoot is made from 3-4 meters.
1. “A bear is let out”. It is the same situation, but there is no “zalom”. They let the bear go away. Hunter dogs, Siberian Laykas, are obligatory for security. The hunter can see the whole animal. The shoot is made from 5-10 meters.
This kind of hunting demands a lot of endurance, composure and dexterity from the hunter.
• The recommended weapon at the hunting – smooth-barreled guns of 12 or 16 calibers (cartridges equipped by bullets), threaded guns of caliber not less than 7,62 mm.
• The recommended clothes: warm winter costumes, not blown hats, winter boots, winter mittens.
Hunting “na privade”
• Spring hunting is held in from April 25 till June 01.
• The day temperature is from +3 º С to + 15 º С , the night temperature is from - 3º С to – 7 º С .
• The best tour term is 7 days or more.
• The group quantity: 1-3 persons.
• The delivery up to the hunting place: vehicle, in the addition wheel and caterpillar tractors can be used, motor boats, animal-drawn transport • The time from Irkutsk up to the hunting place takes 4-6 hours; there will be a stop for an hour for resting and eating.
• Accommodation of hunting-tourists depends on the hunting place. The stop is possible in home conditions of Siberian hunters-tourists, hunting bases, winter stations.
• Serves: timbered loghouses, furnace heating, three-single meal, Russian bathhouse, toilet is outside.
Preparing and hunting:
Foresters put so called “privada” (turned sour meat or fish) at the places of possible appearance of bears after coming out of the dens. Bears find this “privada” on the smell, begin to visit it regularly. A hunter-tourist and a forester sit on a specially equipped tower or lie in ambush waiting for the bear. The shoot is made from 50-70 meters. If it happens at night, the shoot is made with turned on light.
This kind of hunting demands good physical form, endurance, accuracy.
• The recommended weapon at a hunting “na privade”– smooth-barreled guns of 12 or 16 calibers (cartridges equipped by bullets), threaded guns of caliber not less than 7,62 mm.
• The recommended clothes: a warmed demiseasonal costume, a woolen cap, marching boots, short rubber shoes.
Spring hunting on Lake Baikal
• Hunting is held at western coast of northern part of Lake Baikal
• Hunting is held from May 25 till June 05.
• The best tour term is 7 days.
• The group quantity: 3 hunters and 5 tourists.
• The tour starts in a town Severobaikalsk on a comfortable boat, having 8 sleeping places.
• The hunting place is 180 km far from the nearest populated villages among picturesque spurs of Baikal'sky Mountain Range.
• Hunters live in cabins of a bout. The can stay on the shores in winter stations (for 3-4 persons), there is also “ Russian bath-house ” there.
• Hunting is held in two ways: “na privade” (meat of seal), a hunter is waiting for an animal at the feeding place; and “na moryanach” - The hunter tracks down bears feeding on a slope in the woods.
• The weather conditions: at night from - 2 º С to +5 º С , in the noon
from + 10 º С
The recommended clothes: lightened, not blown dressing, high boots, short shoes, the field-glass.
• The recommended weapon at the hunting - rifles or carbines of calibre not less than 7,62 mm.
